The male lead doesn't have to be old. I want to read more about males who are smart and very sharp, but funny and kind also. He can be the happy go lucky kind, very positive.

I'm looking for a relationship between this kind of male and a young heroine who's also likable and isn't a bumbling idiot when it comes to making decisions on love. It's a refreshing change from the silly dark, angsty tragic heroes who do nothing but look good, so if you have any suggestions, I'd appreciate it!

Some characters that fit the description are:

1)

Seh-Hyu x Mi-Hyang of Dear Waltz - Even though the romance barely started, the awesome heroine seems to fall in love with him. He fawns over the heroine (in a gentle way) and is quick to react to her, even though he has a girlfriend. It's not certain if they're gonna end up together (he's pitted against The Tsundere, Loud, Dark-Haired Younger Brother) but let's hope he does.

2)

Masashi x Sakura of Oniichan to Issho - Strangest male love interest I've had the pleasure of reading (he crossdresses 80% of the time, he has a fangirl complex for his little step-sister, fawns over her and stalks her 101% of the time and he doesn't think there's anything wrong with that (in a good way, it's comedy) but inside, he has some issues which suggests there's more to him than meets the eye.

3)

Morita x Hagu of Honey and Clover - He remains the most popular character in Honey and Clover because he's batshit insane. He's hilarious, eccentric, and deals with his love in a pretty weird way. Inside, he's really sensitive.

4)

Kazehaya x Sawako in Reaching You - Kind, upbeat and gentle, he's always smiling and positive. I think of him as the Anti-Ren of Skip Beat.

Side characters (Just to give you an idea of what I'm looking for)

5)

Fai in Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle - He fits the silly, upbeat flamboyant label, with a heavy past.

Clover - it's a josei manga about an OL (office lady = secretary) who embarks on a relationship with her older supervisor, who is very accomplished. The main girl is normal and not an idiot. I wouldn't say that the guy is happy and cheery, but he gentle-ish and mature.

Hotaru no Hikari - 27 year old office worker and her 40-something year old boss. Scans are really behind but

And anything by MATSUMOTO Tomo (e.g. Kiss) since her stories usually pair mature guys with non-idiotic girls

hmm... I guess sugar family maybe? The main male interest is older- but very silly (maybe to much so), I'm guessing he is not as dumb as he acts because he's a school teacher. GIrl is quite tough in her own way.

Ai Hime - Ai to Himegoto > older mature guy (but not to jerky), younger girl. Only thing with this one is it's neice and adoptive uncle. Might not be to everyones taste.

Shugo Chara- ok, I'm starting to go way off here, but anyway... young girl is love interest of older guy. guy is older and silly and often teases the main girl character. only thing is the girl is twelve and he is seventeen, so this one might be real stretch.

Don't worry because you just recommended the mighty Amuto pairing to me.

Also, it'll be nice to read about a love triangle where the kind and funny male lead wins for once.

Hmm..try Missile Happy...read it a long time ago so don't quite remember the exact personalities but I think they are similar to what you're looking for.

This one is complete, so it's always a good read.

I've read Ai to Himegoto, and... it's very fluffy. I would've liked more development and conflict in this relationship though, as they seem to kiss in almost every manga panel. He's a bit stereotypical, down to the possessive streak. It's a nice read though, thanks for the heads up.

Is there no other gentle men in shoujo manga that captivated you ladies, at all?

what about Chocolate Cosmos? the teacher is really sweet and nice. Also, the girl isn't a total idiot...she is kinda strong, except when it comes to him

RISTORANTE PARADISO! Because, like. OYAJI-CANDYYYYY. <3

And HANA NO NAMAE! Well, he's totally morose and depressed and has "issues," but he's also really, really gentle and caring in the most important ways, if not the most obvious and cliched ones.

And LOVE SO LIFE! He's a darling, absolutely adores her and is falling deeper and deeper in love with every passing day; nothing's actually "happened" between them yet, but it's obvious that it will.

And SENSEI! Gentle in a nondescript and slightly expressionless way, but he really does treasure her and look out for her (if we discount the fact that she's his student and a minor and he really shouldn't be seeing her at all, but this is a manga, so... yeah).

And BLUE RAMUN! He's a widower who was absolutely devoted to his then-wife, and it takes him a bit of time to come to terms with the fact that spring has once again arrived in his life in the form of the young female protagonist, but he's really sweet and tentative with her and d'aawwwww.

And MADEMOISELLE BUTTERFLY! He's very gentle and honorable, even if it almost kills him! (Try NOT sleeping with your love interest when she lives in the same house and wants you to.) Plus, he saves her from a life of possible prostitution and looks after her as something precious, so... Yeah. Older and very gentle!

And DENGEKI DAISY! Sure, he's a bit rude and rough around the edges and often talks about pornography to his under-aged love interest , but as we find out, that's all a front to hide his s00per-s3kr1t identity as a world-class hacker and TOTAL MARSHMALLOW TEDDY BEAR WITH A HEART OF CANDY FLOSS. Because he really is that gentle, soft-hearted and loving. He'd go to the ends of the earth for the girl, and it shows...

And Kuroe from BLOOD ALONE! Not quite a textual love interest yet, but definitely subtextual; he doesn't love the female lead back in the way she loves him, but he DOES care for her, and my money's on him ending up with her in a romantic way, as well (or maybe not, but their relationships so sweet already that it hardly matters).

Eta: I know this is an old thread, but it's just so AWESOME that I had to bring it back to life! Gentle older men, gwah. *DROOLS*

spice and wolf... well kind of hard to say... it's obvious that the female IS waaaay more older then the male... but in some point of view the male is more older.. you got to read it to understand

Saiunkoku Monogatari - Seiran has everything you're looking for and the girl isn't a bumbling idiot. But then again, I've only watched the anime and don't know much about the manga or the novels.

Kieli - Harvey is waaaaay older than her, but he fits the gentle older male criteria. But he does have his own issues. Dunno about the girl. I haven't paid that much attention to her.

Suki-tte Ii na yo - The guy's not older than her, but he does treat her very gently. He's more of those playboy types that likes the "odd" girl. But I personally think that the girl is waaaay to defensive,

Ten no Ryuu Chi no Sakura - The male love interest is very much older than her, but also, I guess he treats her gently. It's been a long time I've read it, so I'm too sure about whether she's an idiot or not.

Double Arts - This one's a shounen. Seems to fit.

Hanatsukihime - Definitely treats her nicely. Darkish past (would you say that being a demon is dark past??) and the girl's not that much of an idiot.

Kanata Kara - Now this one, I feel it fits. But I'm not too sure. Girl has to be constantly saved, but I'm sure that the guy treats her gently, I guess...
