The closest suggestion I can give under what your asking for is Angel Densetsu for me the romance isn't great (but then again I was never a fan of slow romances ...) , but everything else is wonderful .... oh the art may be a turn off, but IMO well worth the read.

I mostly read Shoujo (or yaoi >.> ) and you didn't want that .... btw most Josei if not all don't share the school life genre.

Did an advanced search and got this. A pretty short list for a search and I ordered it by rating ^^

EDIT:
from the list I'd recommend Horimiya, Gokusen, Cheese in the Trap and Chocolat. Chocolat doesn't have much emphasis on school life sadly.

Katsu!

Most of them are sports manga btw. I've never known of any other mangaka who can write subtle, slow romance and comedy as effortlessly as Adachi-sensei.

ADACI might be nice, but I do not particularly like the style of drawing. Too old-fashioned to me.
I prefer to look like manga are that I give above the bottom line.

The cover art doesn't really give justice to Adachi's art though. Try reading atleast 10 chapters(The whole first volume) of Cross Game and see. If you still don't like it then you probably won't like any of his other works.

I suppose if you liked Video Girl Ai, then you can try I"s by the same author. Or Parallel from the author of Pastel. Or Hatsukoi Limited from the author of Ichigo 100%. There's also:

how about Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge, it's josei so the art is probably not your type but it really funny and the romance is so slow after 129 chapter there's still no progress
