I have friend interested in manga and anime. What are some good recommendations for beginners? No yaoi, yuri, shounen ai, shojou ai, seinen, josei, ecchi, etc...PLEASE! Anything else is appreciated, like shounen, shojou, fantasy, supernatural, etc. Try to keep them somewhat light, because, like I said, she's just starting out. Thanks! biggrin

fruits basket
lovely complex
ouran high school host club
vampire game
beast master
eensy-weensy monster

all shoujo. as for shounen maybe Ranma 1/2, and my first anime what hooked me for life was Dragonball, but I guess I was too young that time.

A newbie, huh. Cowboy Bebop is always a good place to start for anime. It's got one of, if not the best english dubs you will ever find. Dragon Ball anime and manga. I guess you also include Dragonball Z as well, but it gets highly repetitive.
The Tower of Druaga anime
.hack//sign

Rave
Cross Game
itsumo Misora
One piece
Alive
Bamboo Blade
Full metal Alchemist
GTO
Hayate x Blade
Kekkaishi
Lovely Complex
Nurarihyon no Mago
Yanki-kun to Megane-chan
Ann Cassandra
Love Hina
Mahou Sensei Negima!

Shounen:

Pandora Hearts
Death Note
Tegami Bachi (Caution: some nudity but nothing too extreme)
Bakuman

Shoujo:

Ultra Maniac
Orange Planet
AAA
Cherry Juice
Chocolate Cosmos
High School Debut

Just a few suggestions; I can't remember anymore right now.

You should tell her to start with something light and funny- those are always good pull-ins
Azumanga Daioh
Lucky Star
Gintama
and since she is a girl, shojous wouldn't hurt
Meru Puri
Fruits Basket

I would specially recommend Azumanga Daioh and Meru Puri, because they are fairly short, so it will be easier for a beginner. And I agree with some other people that mentioned Full Metal Alchemist ....I have yet to meet someone who didn't like that series

might better if i ask a question first.
how old is she?

or more to-the-point,
what theme she enjoys most?

Doesn't xxxholic have some tie-ins with Tsubasa in the story? Because i remember trying to read it and something about Syaoran and Sakura came up and confused me. So I'm guessing it would be better not to have it as a first-ever manga. Imo i think a manga that has one story would be best because manga with many adaptations and prequels/sequels can get confusing.

anime?
get her to watch Usagi Drop. now.
btw, the demographic, at least in anime, does not matter.
or so i think.
they are often toned down for tv viewers anyway(the explicit contents, i mean)
