lol I totally read "it doesn't have to be"
...
eek damn
...
well at least one more reason to turn to shoujo/josei biggrin

I'll just mark all action/supernatural ones with a * (as long as it has a major influence on the story)

edit: sad how many that are... it's shounen though so so what did I expect^^

You know there are some really cool shoujo manga like Baby, Kokoro no Mama ni! or Immortal Rain. The first one is a quite non-generic and even has a male lead (unfortunatelly no one translates it), the second reads like a shounen.

That's like saying you hate books...
Art differs
Plot differs
Characters differ

I guess this comes from either reading too much bad ones or not enough or from people spouting nonsense like: "ah just another typical shoujo"

Immortal Rain is a superb example for a shounenish shoujo
Last Game would also fit your request and is really well executed

What do you guys think??

I totally understand him. Shoujo/Josei have a totally different feel. The stories have too much drama ... plus the mc's are really girly. Don't know how to explain that one, I mean they are full of flowers, pinky stuff, squabbles between girls, ... uffffffff
I recognise that I have not read too many shoujos/joseis, but from the few that I have tried, and being those very famous ones, I find that genre don't appeal to me. I mean, they are good and well done, but not for me (for example: Hana yori Dango). With very few exceptions, like: 14-sai no Koi, problem being: too hard to find the good ones beetwen so many shoujo-ish ones.

Answering the post, I would recommend:
Seconding Horimiya
Seconding Densha Otoko
Molester Man
Genshiken maybe?
Love Lucky
And you could try the Adachi Mitsuru mangas. You could start reading Touch
Seconding Sundome
B Gata H Kei it's 4-koma, but funny bigrazz

And if you are willing to read something with a bit of action and/or fantasy, I would really recommend:
Love Hina
Angel Densetsu
Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo Don't take the gender bender tag too much into account
Iris zero

Yeah, and another that I dislike in most shoujos, is that there is always a part in which the male lead and female will have a fight or something then another character(mostly males) will step in and comfort the female, then they will get close then, you get what I mean..

An example of shoujo that I really liked, Kaichou wa Maid-sama!
, the art is very good, Misaki is so kawaii..

Haven't read that one yet, but if it's bearable and nice I might give it a chance smile

I admit to find good ones is pretty hard... And about that flowers, pinky stuff... ever tried the deep love series? And please don't try this because it is so very far away from comedy...
It is not that every shoujo has too much drama, they have at least some drama at all compared to most shounen (but yeah there are of course the cliched and overloaded ones).

I think the problem lies in trying the "famous ones". I'd say I'm pretty tolerant with shoujo, still I didn't last more than 5 chapters of Fruits Basket... the famous ones are mostly, well, way to shoujoish.

I started with shounen myself, went to seinen, and under protest tried some shoujo, then josei, nowadays I think thrice before even trying a shounen because the other demographics have just way more plot (in most cases) and more intricate characters and most of all they have some character progression at least...

And let's be honest, to find good shounen is at least as hard as to find good shoujo, if you have any requirements for plot/characters and don't wanna read some generic romcom ecchi harem or action save-the-world stuff...

But to each his own, I really didn't want to blow this out of proportions into some shoujo discussion, so I'll just stop here before the poster or the mods start complaining.
Just pm me if there is something else.

and try 14-sai no Koi even if it is josei...
